BULGARIA TOOK OVER THE EU PRESIDENCY
by Roni Alasor
Brussels, 1 January 2018 - Middle East Diplomatic (MED - Bulgaria took over the rotating presidency of the EU council from 1st January. The European affairs have always been one of the few topics in Bulgaria, which reach wide national consensus and full range support since 2007 when the country joined the EU.
Under the motto “United we stand strong”, Bulgaria takes over the EU presidency in challenging times. The future of Europe and the young people, security, stability and digital economy, as well as Western Balkans will be among the key areas of the Bulgarian EU presidency.
Sofia is decided to work hard to reach consensus in the debates between the European capitals. Brexit, the situation in the Middle East, ISIS-terror-migration-Turkey-refugees and other hot topics would also certainly be in the agenda of the Bulgarian government and its EU partners in the next six months.
Bulgaria will also host the Interparliamentary Conference for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) in February 2018 and an EU-Western Balkans summit in May 2018, as well as several other European meetings and events.
