Demand : UN to investigate Turkish use of chemical weapons

Roni Alasor – November 09, 2022 - Middle East Diplomatic - After systematically allegations based in pictures and video-records from Kurdish side and a recent report of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), now a Belgium law firm and well known lawyers urges UN to investigate Turkey`s use of chemical weapons against Kurds.

Mr Johan Vande Lanotte, a well know Belgium lawyer, former Minister of State and professor by special appointment of constitutional law and human rights at Ghent University and his colleague Mr Johan Heymans at Van Steenbrugge Advocaten Law firm, believes that there are serious elements and proves of Turkey`s possible use of chemical weapons which should be investigate it.

Talking to MED-Diplomatic, Mr Johan Vande Lanotte confirm that they take serious the elements indicated in the recent report from the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW).

“Yes, we take the IPPNW report serious and we believe that its important that all elements and allegations should be investigated by a UN commission.”

In the letter sent to UN Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr António Guterres, Mr Vande Lanote and Mr Johan Heymans writing that a Such fact-finding mission would be extremely important and urgent to clarify the allegations which have been voiced by the Kurdish population, but which have not been the object of an independent investigation so far. In this regard, my clients, Coalition Against the Use of Chemical Weapons in Kurdistan, particularly want to refer to the very recent report of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) of 18 October 2022 which voices the same concerns.

Last week, the World-renowned American linguist and philosopher Noam Chomsky also demanded a "serious investigation" into Turkish use of chemical attacks against guerrilla forces in Kurdistan.

General Murat Karayilan, the Kurdish commander-in-chief of the People`s Defence Forces (HPG) fighting against the islamist Turkish state told to media that “Turkey is encouraged to commit war crimes at the international level: When the Turkish state saw that there was no reaction from international circles to the use of prohibited weapons, it dared to use even more chemical gases, tactical nuclear weapons and thermobaric bombs in 2022. The silent attitude of international institutions and especially the support of NATO countries for the Turkish operations, as well as the fact that certain countries offer such weapons to Turkey or manufacture them with it, indicates their complicity. At the very least, the silence of the international institutions as well as the supportive position of the states concerned has encouraged and even made the Turkish state overconfident. In the 21st century, it openly and daily uses dozens of weapons against the freedom fighters of the Kurdish people, which are prohibited by the agreements it has signed.”

While experts from IPPNW and Belgium lawyers demands urgently for the establishment of an UN investigation commission, and despite to the hundreds of Kurdish protests in all Europe since 2021, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are still silent without doing any efforts to investigate the allegations against the Turkish army’s  use of forbidden weapons.
